Learn to fly!


Thinking about learning how to soar? No previous aviation experience is required, just a will to learn. The Red Wing Soaring Association is a club that also has as members, FAA rated certified flight instructors. As a member of the club, several different FAA glider ratings can be achieved. For new soaring pilots, the FAA has 2 ratings available.

Requirements for Private Pilot Glider Rating

  • 16 years of age

  • Read/speak/write/understand English

  • Receive a logbook endorsement

  • Pass knowledge test (written)

  • Pass a Practical Test, oral and flying

    Aeronautical experience required:

  • 10 hours flight time in gliders including:

    • 20 flights in the areas of operation

    • Instruction - 3 flights in test prep within 60 days before test

    • 2 hours of solo including 10 launches and landings

  • No medical required

  • Note: Students can solo at the age of 14.

Requirements to Add-on a Glider Rating (for current airplane rated pilots)

  • Applicant has logged more than 40 hours in heavier than air

  • 3 hours' flight time in gliders, including:

    • 10 solo flights

    • 3 training flights within 60 days prior to test

  • No medical required

  • No written exam required

  • Serves as a Flight Review
